Architecture, Autumn, and 1700s Cookies: A Perfect Wayland Afternoon

On a delightful September afternoon of September 21st, 67 curious and cheerful walkers gathered in Wayland Center for a guided stroll led by local historian Gretchen Schuler. With her signature warmth and deep knowledge, Gretchen pointed out architectural gems that often go unnoticed as we zip past on our daily routines. These buildings — quiet witnesses to centuries of Wayland life — are the face we show the world, and on this day, they were given the attention they deserve.

Like pausing to admire a late-blooming flower, the walk offered a chance to appreciate the man-made beauty that surrounds us. From multi-paned windows to historic facades, each stop revealed a story waiting to be told.

Many thanks to Mya Tomlinson, Production Assistant for WayCam for recording this event. You can now watch the tour recording online here.

To cap off the afternoon, participants gathered for a cozy treat: crisp cider and cookies baked from authentic 1700s recipes. The flavors were a hit — a sweet taste of history! And for those who’d like to recreate the experience at home, we’re sharing two of the cookie recipes so you can bake your own batch of colonial flavor.

Stay tuned for more Rev. 250th events — Wayland’s past has never felt so alive.
