My father Robert B. Duncan worked 35 or more years at the WATERTOWN DAIRY that became
H & M Farms at
6 MOORE RD WAYLAND MA.
HE BEGAN as a farm hand and ended up the Chef for all the help that Hymie Shick and Mona Shick had (including them) until it closed in 1988. So many wonderful memories were made at the farm. We’d all visit.
Hymie and Mona were very special people.
I STILL love them very much. I know, if not for the Shick’s my Dad’s life could have been very different.
They gave many people jobs, places to live and pay to sustain themselves. They lengthened and saved many lives. THEY FOUND A PLACE TO EXCEPT THEM AS THEY WERE. THEY GAVE THEM RESPECT AND A PLACE TO BE.
I bless the ground Hymie walked on and his wife Mona. They adored my dad and loved him deeply. My dad loved them too and whistled while he worked! Our family would visit the farm, our dad and all. What a great time it always was. I know Hymie is gone but he remains in my heart forever. My Dad is gone too and he is loved and missed always. I still own a WATERTOWN DAIRY farm jacket my dad wore from the 50’s or 60’s. THOSE days and those people were very unique and will never be repeated or forgotten. be
My grandmother Maete Shick started the Watertown Dairy in Watertown Mass. in the early 1900’s with my grandfather Jacob Shick. My mother Bessie and her sister Sarah , brother Abe and brother Hymie work in the dairy. In the 1950’s my uncle hymie and his wife Celia took over the operations of the farm and moved it to wayland . They worked very hard and kept the farm going. My uncle divorced my aunt Celia and later on in life married Mona a very nice lady. My grand mother wrote a book called the Burden and the Trophy of her life story coming from Russia and building the Watertown dairy. Just do people know that Mona came into my uncle hymies life after all the hard work in building the Watertown Dairy.
My name is David Cohen. My mother was a Bessie Shick.
DearDenise,
I just found your lovely letter about my dad and step mom , He was something special.
During World War 2 your dad served with the 82nd or 101st Airborne Division ( I can’t remember which one ). He was my “go to guy” when I made a mistake learning how to deal with the Crew. I will never forget my last week on the farm before I was leaving for the Army. He instilled in me what it takes to be a combat platoon leader so the men would follow me out of respect, not just because I was an officer.
I miss my uncle Hyman.
Small world. My father grew up with Hyman in Watertown. I have a picture of my Father (Matthew Boggia), Uncle (Edward Boggia), (unknown boy), and Hyman in a football linebacker pose from 1925 in Watertown. I met Hyman in the 1980’s when the Wayland Housing Authority was attempting to include some affordable housing at the farm site. Great guy. I gave him a copy of this picture and he talked about how wonderful it was growing up in Watertown. I’d be happy to share the picture.

My grandmother Maete Shick wrote a book of her life coming to America and with her husband Jacob Shick and stating the Watertown dairy in Watertown Mass. The name of the book is the Burden and the Trophy. I am in the process of making a movie of the book. It is a very serious project and will be a big success. My name is David Cohen.
