A House Named for a Wayland Marriage
The Wayland Museum & Historical Socieity is based in the Grout-Heard House. The house is named for two families, the Grouts and the Heards. Both were here early in Wayland’s history, and the two names came together through a wedding. In 1822 Jerusha Grout married Newell Heard, and after that the house was home to both families. That is how it became the Grout-Heard House.

Now, you too can get married here.

What to know:

• The fee is $125 for the use of the ground floor of the house for your ceremony for 2 hours max.
• We can host up to 15 people total.
• We ask for at least three days’ notice, which lines up with the timing for your marriage license from the Town Clerk!
• This is a ceremony space, not a reception hall.
• Food and drink are not part of the rental, so please plan to celebrate your meal elsewhere.
• The house is old and a few doorways are narrow. If anyone in your party uses a wheelchair or has mobility needs, tell us when you reach out and we will walk the space with you to find the setup that works best.
• The grounds are open for wedding ceremony photos.

Couples can choose to marry here because they want a place with deep Wayland roots, in the heart of our historic district, without the cost and scale of a full venue. Come see the house and picture your intimate ceremony in it.
